WHAT WE’RE BUZZING ABOUT
Animal Wise. This amazing book by Virginia Morrell, is full of scientific studies and gives ample evidence that so many of our animal brethren experience a rich cognitive life.
IF I COULD TALK TO THE ANIMALS
Parrots. They’re colorful, loud, social and amazingly cognitive. Even more, they are quite the conversationalists. A scientist in Venezuela studying parrotlets, the tiniest member of the parrot family, has found that there is a strong possibility that parrot parents are giving their chicks individual names. These names, which sound just like vocalizations to human ears, are unique and are learned by the chicks and used throughout their lives when communicating with other parrots. This study certainly makes us want to re-think the unflattering phrase “bird-brain”.
